The UGR contributes to the diagnosis of air quality with measurements that are being carried out in various areas of the city with the intention of studying the impact of the implementation of the low emission zone.
The Group of Physics of the Atmosphere, GFAT, of the University of Granada, has been developing a campaign to measure air quality at various sites around the city of Granada, with the aim of exploring the representativeness of the air quality stations of the Junta de Andalucía, so that it can be known if they cover the varied situations that can present the air quality in the environment of the city. The first results already point to the fact that, in certain locations, certain pollutants can occasionally exceed the values measured at the Granada Norte traffic station, which is the one that exceeds the limits established by European legislation and the World Health Organization.
The Group of Physics of the Atmosphere develops its activity in the Interuniversity Research Institute of the Earth System, IISTA, and has a history of more than 30 years in the study of the atmosphere including aspects of air quality. GFAT has contributed with several scientific publications and the preparation of reports on air quality diagnosis, to better understand the state of air quality in Granada. Since September 2022 GFAT has a Mobile Atmospheric Observation Unit (Fig. 1), acquired in the framework of the project Thematic Center on Mountain Ecosystems & Remote sensing, Deep learning-AI, e-Services University of Granada-Sierra Nevada (Lifewatch-2019-10-UGR-01). This equipment operated in the framework of the Singular Laboratory of the University of Granada AGORA has been used until last summer for the study of air quality in the Alpujarra area, with special emphasis on the area of the Barranco de Poqueira. After finishing that work, it is being used in this project in Granada and the ZBE.
